It was sunny this day but it was freezing! Would you know? Maybe lol
This is a huge reason why people don’t want photos in Maine in the winter. The weather is so unpredictable. You don’t know if it will snow or be 0 below.
Stephanie’s kids were champs though. They did so well for the time that we had together!
See Stephanie and I did a photo trade where she took my family photos back in September and she really wanted photos in the snow… well that didn’t quite work out.
So what can you do if you want milestone photos in the winter months?
Well you can roll with the punches and pick a date then stick to it, you can chase the weather and try to work around your schedule, or you can settle with a studio and get a warm seamless session.
Let’s look at the pro’s and cons of them all!
With not being flexible on the date you have to let go of the fact that you might get less than ideal weather. When you or your photographer has a busy schedule there might not be room for spontaneity when it comes to your session date. Some photographers book way far out in advance- I will say that winter sessions are usually our slow season.
With chasing the weather you have to not only be really flexible but so does your photographer, that means either canceling plans or not making any so that you have a weekend open that may have the weather you desire. I will say I am not a fan of this as weather can be unpredictable – meaning it can change the day before or day of.
With going to a studio you are inside and can wear whatever you want. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a winter session as you won’t really be able to tell what time of year it is. You can obviously still dress for the season and try to get some shots with the windows showing the outside. I personally don’t shoot in a studio as I write this.
So now that you know all the potential outcomes, review what would be best and go for it!
