It is so special when you know the people you are taking photos of. But most of the time your clients are strangers to you- at least at the beginning. How can you make it so you become like friends. After all there is a magic to be made when you get together with people you are familiar with.

Well, for one you can have a consult call. What is normally reserved for wedding clients can be translated to families as well. You can not have a time limit on your sessions- or at least roughly aim for an hour. A huge reason I don’t offer mini sessions anymore- it is just not enough time.

You can also pick a place that takes a minute to walk to. This gives a chance for in person small talk and getting the gitters out. This only happened once with people I knew but we got a smoothie after our session. I know this is after but it creates great connection for the future.

So with this session in particular we moved the shoot up two days since there was going to be rain. I am so glad we did because the weather was perfect and the leave were still on the trees. The view was also amazing- Appleton Ridge is breathtaking.

I have done a number of just son and mother sessions over the years- a lot the fall of 2021. There is a special bond between mother and son. There is an extra sweetness brought to the table. I will take any family dynamics. One I have not seen yet is just a father daughter session.

This is also a reminder that I do trade sessions. You can trade me something and pay for the rest of the session which is what this client did. I got an ll bean sled which covered a little over half the payment and then she paid me the rest. There really is no excuse not to get photos then.
